Samuel Ready Scholar Sidney Butler, a student at Garrison Forest School in Owings Mills, MD, was one of 12 fellows selected from a pool of over 50 applicants for the Elijah Cummings Youth Program (ECYP) Class of 2016.

After completing her first year with ECYP, Sidney, along with the other fellows, will travel to Israel during the summer of 2015, where they will gain first-hand cross-cultural knowledge and leadership skills.

The Elijah Cummings Youth Program in Israel is an elite two-year leadership fellowship for high school students in Baltimore. The program was fueled by the desire to further historic African-American and Jewish bonds, and was developed with a three-step leadership approach that includes skill-building workshops, a month-long cross-cultural immersion in Israel, and community service with public speaking engagements after-school.

ABOUT THE ELIJAH CUMMINGS YOUTH PROGRAM IN ISRAEL

The Elijah Cummings Youth Program in Israel was created in 1998 as a partnership between Congressman Cummings and the Baltimore Jewish Council. In 1999, with support from the Hoffberger Family Philanthropies in memory of Jerold C. Hoffberger, ECYP was established as a distinct 501(c)(3) with a board of directors. ECYP was inspired by a project of the late Rep. Mickey Leland of Houston. Moved deeply by a visit to Israel in the 1970's, Rep. Leland organized a trip for youth in his city to live on a kibbutz.

The program's application process requires the submission of letters of recommendation, short essays, a high school transcript, and an interview by the full Board of Directors, which includes Honorary Chair, Congressman Elijah Cummings.

Over the past 15 years, ECYP has produced 180 outstanding alumni and achieved a college graduation rate near 100%. Alumni have demonstrated an uncanny commitment to public service, global activism, and leadership. ECYP graduates include two Peace Corps volunteers, a travel writer in Moscow, a pilot in West Africa, and numerous teachers, doctors, firefighters, and military officers.
