St. Paul's School for Girls

Since 1979, St. Paul's School for Girls has partnered with Samuel Ready Scholarships, Inc. to help young girls of exceptional academic promise but limited funds attend SPSG. During the last three decades, Samuel Ready has given scholarship aid to over 44 SPSG students. These young women have graduated from our school and gone on to some of the finest colleges and universities in the country. Today they are CEOs, teachers, engineers, counselors, business women, and even a television producer.

"Our current Samuel Ready scholars demonstrate the qualities so important to the Samuel Ready School, 'academic achievement, cultural interests, school loyalty and a spiritual base,'" says Dr. Monica Gillespie, head of school. "It is with great pride that we watch their growth within our community and their inclusion in such a long-standing distinguished network of scholars in the Baltimore area."

While here, Samuel Ready girls are fully immersed in the life of the school, both as scholars and as active participants in the many activities offered at SPSG. They play on teams, sing in musicals, serve as leaders for our clubs and organizations, volunteer time with community service projects, and contribute fully to our SPSG community, living up to all expectations set by the school. Without the generous support of Samuel Ready, these girls would have missed the exceptional SPSG experience, a program committed to teaching girls the way girls learn best, encouraging each girl to reach her full potential. Thank you, Samuel Ready, for continued partnership with St. Paul's School for Girls.

School Overview

St. Paul's School for Girls is a small, independent day school committed to educating over 400 students with diverse talents, abilities, and backgrounds. Located on 38 acres in the Green Spring Valley of Baltimore County, Maryland, the school supports a well-educated and experienced faculty committed to providing an academically challenging program while nurturing and supporting each student in grades five through twelve.

The purpose of the school is clearly articulated in the school's mission statement:

St. Paul's School for Girls educates the minds and hearts of girls in a supportive and intellectually challenging community that encourages respect, integrity, creativity, and spiritual growth, preparing them as independent and confident young women to embrace the extraordinary opportunities of our complex world.

Proud of its affiliation with the Episcopal Church through Old St. Paul's, the oldest Episcopal congregation in downtown Baltimore, the school endeavors to pass on the spiritual and ethical values of the Judeo-Christian heritage and to instill in each girl a sense of stewardship and service. SPSG strives to create an environment that is supportive of the multicultural fabric of the school and the Baltimore community.

To this end, the school crafted a strong diversity statement that reaches out to all families:

Believing that "every child is a child of God" and that mutual respect lies at the heart of our community, St. Paul's School for Girls is committed to creating a supportive and intellectually challenging environment for all individuals.

We value the multiple perspectives deriving from differences in race, national and ethnic origin, religion, class, gender, sexual orientation, and physical characteristics.

We welcome a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and trustees, and through our policies, curriculum, and programs seek to bridge cultural divisions and build appreciation for our nation's rich multi-cultural heritage.

We strive to model, encourage, and require conduct that affirms these beliefs and strengthens our cohesiveness as a community.

The core of this community is the student body not only collectively, but individually. Each girl at SPSG is prized for her own special skills and talents. The charge to all teachers is to recognize and nurture each student's special gifts and to educate that student in body, mind, and spirit.

To support these goals, SPSG offers an excellent college-preparatory academic program and outstanding extracurricular and leadership opportunities. Committed to single-sex education for girls, SPSG understands the benefits of coed experiences and seeks ways to take advantage of the close proximity of St. Paul's School by offering a mix of coordinated classes.

By giving students a sense of belonging and by encouraging self confidence within a superior academic environment, the school prepares young women to embrace the global nature of the 21st century, to make full use of their talents, and to seek out fulfilling lives as independent, disciplined, and generous citizens of the world.

In addition, SPSG embraces environmental conservation and supports all activities that enhance the beauty of God's world. Our school has been designated a Green School for our commitment to environmental initiatives by the state of Maryland. Our green school philosophy is embodied in the following environmental mission statement:

St. Paul's School for Girls acknowledges the innate affinity humans have with the natural environment. We honor that affinity by preparing our students, through curriculum and program, to become active environmental citizens of the world they will inherit. We also honor our responsibility to operate the school in a manner that is consistent with our mission and with our obligations to the local and global environment, as stewards of God's earth.

St. Paul's School for Girls is an independent church-affiliated school that welcomes girls in grades five through twelve without regard to race, color, religion, sexual orientation, or ethnic group. SPSG does not discriminate in its admission and educational policies, financial aid, athletic and other school administered programs, or in the recruitment and hiring of faculty and staff.
